The Learning Engineering Toolkit You Need

Jim Goodell joined #IDIODC on November 9.

Learning Engineer may sound like a fancy new title for instructional designers, but it's so much more than that. The current state of our "industry" is spread quite thin across many domains. There is art, science, technology, humanity, politics, business, and so much more all part of the work we do as corporate training professionals of one form or another. Learning Engineering finally brings it all together under one banner.

Jim Goodell is the editor of the new book The Learning Engineering Toolkit. He joined us to talk about the growing number of practitioners adapting to a new method of instructional design. Additionally, Jim explained the services Learning Engineering provides for the enterprise designer.

This conversation will appeal to everyone in the L&D and corporate training industry. And whether you're new to Instructional design or a seasoned professional, you'll benefit from understanding the future of Learning Engineering. The Learning Engineering Toolkit is everything you need to get started.

But remember, Learning Engineering is a defined process that, ideally, includes a team of professionals. However, the training army of one can also benefit from knowing the Learning Engineering process.

About Jim Goodell

Jim Goodell is editor and co-author of Learning Engineering Toolkit, a practical guide to the rich and varied applications of learning engineering, a fast-emerging practice being adopted by teams of L&D professionals that synthesizes the learning sciences, instructional design, engineering design, and other methodologies to support learners. Written in a colloquial style and full of collaborative, actionable strategies, the book explores the essential foundations, approaches, and real-world challenges inherent to ensuring participatory, data-driven, learning experiences across populations and contexts.

Jim is also co-author of the (free) publications Science of Remote Learning and Student-Centered Learning: Functional Requirements for Integrated Systems to Optimize Learning and a thought leader in the world of learning engineering and data standards. He is Director of Innovation at Quality Information Partners, where he helps lead development of the US Department of Education sponsored Common Education Data Standards.  He supports the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s T3 Innovation Network and Jobs and Employment Data Exchange. He is Chair of the IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee, chairs the IEEE Industry Consortium on Learning Engineering Competencies, Curriculum, and Credentials SIG and serves on the ICICLE Steering Committee. Prior to QIP, he was Executive Vice President at the Center for Educational Leadership and Technology and chief technologist at Pixeldance where he led the development of interactive learning technologies.

Interesting fact: Jim's first job was "Computer-based Courseware Developer" at Digital Equipment Corp. (which was the 2nd largest computer company in the world at the time, but was on the decline a decade after because they didn't innovate to meet market demands... hint interactive video laserdisc was not the right innovation).
