As our industry continues to change and adapt to new technologies and business needs, our job roles and titles also change.
Creating engaging learning experiences using technology is an important part of our future as professionals. It’s always been our responsibility to design and develop engaging learning experiences.
However, the rapid growth of the Internet and other advanced technologies have given us more options to choose from. A great example is the growth of video-based eLearning as well as new tech like virtual reality and augmented reality. These technologies provide engaging experiences that designers and developers are taking advantage of today.
This week on Instructional Designers in Offices Drinking Coffee (#IDIODC) we were joined by Nyla Spooner, also known as @NylaLXD. You may remember Nyla from our recent episode titled The Intersection of Racial Justice and L&D.
In this episode of #IDIODC Nyla spoke about her recent journey into the world of L&D and making the decision to transition into instructional design and learning experience design.
We also talked about her podcast, her passion for mentoring other instructional designers, and the strategy behind the crafting of her personal brand. NylaLXD is her website, YouTube Channel, and social media presence. And her podcast is called "I'm New Here".
Nyla shared some details about how she launched her podcast:
Listen to the archived version of this conversation to get more details on how she uses these tools – I've added a link to it at the end of this post.
And with a driving passion for helping other people of color she also launched DesignxHumanity.
The web site defines it this way:
“DESIGN x HUMANITY (design by humanity) is a collective pairing experienced creatives with fresh faces to collaborate on real-world projects advocating for equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism.”
Her goal for the project is to mentor 100+ new designers of color within the next year. She has gathered support from industry experts and others who are working together to create projects that will be freely available to the public.
It’s a really cool project, and if you’re interested in being part of the collective you can join on the website.
