As we hopefully begin to see a light at the end of the pandemic shutdown tunnel, we sat down with Tom Spiglanin to talk about what we all learned working from home. And also, what's next.
Many companies have made bold moves, like announcing continued teleworking options for employees. But those are general announcements for the entire company.
In this episode of IDIODC we wanted to talk with the community specifically about how going back to the office – or not – affects the work we do and the training departments we work in.
One interesting area of discussion included the use of live online working sessions. Everyone joins the same virtual room but discussion only occurs as needed. This makes a space for spontaneous work-related conversations that used to happen by the water cooler, or in the lunch room.
Tom has been thinking about this so much he wrote a book, "Everyone's Guide to Teleworking".
Tom is a friend, and also the only rocket scientist we know working (retired) in training & development. His perspective is unique in many ways, but for our community he has a special connection, and understanding, of the struggles we face as corporate training professionals.

About Thomas Spiglanin
Dr. Thomas Spiglanin has been helping people be more effective in the workplace for more than thirty years. As a teleworker himself, he understands how effective communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills underpin success in a digital workplace.
Working predominantly with technical employees for over thirty years in the aerospace industry, and the last few decades in the training field, he saw first-hand the value of being able to communicate complex concepts in ways that others can understand. In much the same way digital technologies enabled distanced business communication, Tom saw a steady decline in the very interpersonal skills needed to be effective using those tools.
Instructional Designers in Offices Drinking Coffee (affectionately known as IDIODC) is a weekly live videocast and podcast that helps instructional designers with pain points and provides best practices and industry insight.
Every Wednesday morning at 10am ET hosts Brent Schlenker and Chris Van Wingerden guide us through an upbeat and candid conversation with their guests from the elearning and training world. The live cast session encourages peers to participate in the chat and share their own personal insight! After airing live, you can catch the learning podcast on all major streams such as Spotify, Apple and Google Play podcasts, as well as on YouTube.
IDIODC is a Top 40 Hit!
We could have been #1 but chair dancing was not a judged element. But no matter, we’re just happy to be selected. Check out this amazingly short press release: “IDIODC was selected as one of the Top 40 Learning and Development Podcasts on the web.”
