Practical Application of Learning Analytics & Data with Sam Rogers

The concept of Learning Analytics has been a hot topic for several years in the L&D industry. There are those that talk about it, and then there are those doing the work and making it happen within their organizations. Sam Rogers is one of the doers.

Sam joined us in this episode of Instructional Designers in Offices Drinking Coffee to discuss the realities of working with data and analytics within a large enterprise.  As you might imagine, the task is not easy. But each of us needs to start somewhere. The big question is often where. Trying to figure out the proper data to collect and how you will collect can be daunting. But you must start somewhere.

Defining the terms used to define your data is a great place to start. Do you know how your LMS defines “Complete”? Or what about “Pass” vs “Fail”?  And does every learning program in your organization use the same definition of what each of these terms mean?

Sam has experienced first-hand how important it is to define these terms first.  So many people jump straight to purchasing one technology or another in an effort to get better analytics. But the information you get from the tech is only as good as the data being put into it and how well you understand the meaning of that data.

Sam shared how he got the analytics ball rolling and some of the hurdles he had to jump to keep it going. It was a great conversation to launch IDIODC into the new year.
